The girls finished school on Thursday, June 6th. They had a surprise visit from Grammie. She came to look at houses in Wilmington, DE. Although she was unable to find one this weekend, we are all excited by the idea of her moving closer to us.
Today, June 10th, we left for NYC. Even the rain couldn't keep us from getting excited about our time away. Upon our arrival, we enjoyed a fantastic lunch at Gyu-Kaku, a Japanese BBQ. The food was amazingly delicious. It is going to be hard to find a restaurant that can top it!
After that, we hopped aboard the subway and headed to the Guggenheim. While none of us love modern or abstract art, we did enjoy opening our minds to the creative expressions of many different artists. I'm not going to say that we didn't questions whether some of the art was actually art!!! Kendal and I had visited the Guggenheim many years ago and wanted to show the girls the unique architecture of the museum as well. The shape of the building is the inverse of a stepped pyramid, expanding up and out. Frank Loyd Wright was the architect. The spiral ramp is a quarter mile long and at a 3 degree incline. Interestingly, all artwork is hung at a 1.5 degree angle so that it appears level to the human eye!
Of course, no trip to NYC would be complete without, at least, a quick stop into the American Girl Doll store. A few small purchases were made by Macy and Lilia and then "home" we went. Since there was so much walking today and the weather was not cooperating, we decided to order dinner in. A nice relaxing end to a fantastic first day.
